Some years ago while in meditation I was blessed with the Beloved Presence of Babaji. Over ten days he imparted to me as much quickening as I was then able to receive. This was a living experience. When we 'come out' of a living experience we are left with how to gather the fruit of that into some communicable form. Out of that experience I 'gathered' two precepts, and I believe I remember them at some point every day.
The first of these precepts is -
“Truth is at the point of paradox”
And the second precept is
"Everything from the inside out".
In two years these two lines have still not run out of inspirational juice for me.
In 1999 I had the experience, while standing at the door of my then mountain home, of seeing the familiar spruce tree to my left, the tree I was aware of every day while coming and going, suddenly light up from the inside and become an incredibly detailed system of radiant energy. I could see the cosmic energies entering and the earth energies radiating outwards. I could see the minuscule intelligences ‘working’ the tree, moving the sap, pushing the leaves, enlightening the tree with their presence. It was a startling and life changing experience for me, and from that moment on a tree was more than a tree to me. I could even say paradoxically ‘the tree was not a tree’
From then on I became increasingly aware of the radiant presence of light energy within all things and that this living light was conscious. A flower loves to live. It is divinely crafted to express its beauty. I believe a flower enjoys its life. Plants 'move' when they are approached. They register when another plant is being cut. I became more and more aware of this realm of inner beauty that loves to live. I became aware that at the Heart Center of every human being there is a light, a life light that is the center of this radiant presence. And I became fascinated by this light and how although we are not consciously aware of it, it is the center of our being. We are born with the light on, and when we die the light goes out of the heart back into the another frequency of energy.
Yet the core light in the body atoms is still there, although no longer 'gathered' into a 'unit' by the conscious radiance of the Heart, and so the body begins to loose its form.
Words alone cannot express transcendent consciousness. Yet, words filled with the awareness of Presence can stimulate remembrance for another. Great art in its highest form calls to the Soul. Great art, whether is be visual, music, dance, poetry, engages the full attention and helps to shift the consciousness away from the outer fixation of limited identity to the inner Fields of Radiance that exist behind and throughout all form.
When people have ‘transcendent’ experiences we hear phrases such as ‘indescribable’, ‘beyond words’ ‘transporting’, ‘life changing’. We know that their basic reference for ‘reality’ has shifted and that something that has been so remarkable for them is at the same time not fully communicable.
All of the mystics are those who have had such experiences and many of them have spent the rest of their lives attempting to lead others to this transcendent state of consciousness. It is in this transcendent state that the paradox of earthly truth is cracked and there is an actual experience of ONENESS. This is what our Beloved Babaji is communicating in his precept “Truth is at the point of paradox.” We hear such phrases as the ‘rootless root’, the ‘causeless cause’, the ‘silent sound’. In an effort to communicate an experience that is beyond duality we use words that have a seemingly inherent contradiction. This can have the effect, and I believe the ‘desired effect’ of bringing the human mind, the ‘holding mind’ to the point where its ‘incontestable logic ‘ just gives up, gives in, stops its incessant argument of either this or that. When the mind gives up its ‘hold’ the Presence can enter our awareness. Once we truly have a moment of experiencing Presence nothing on the ‘outside’ is ever the same again. We experience ‘eyes that can see’ and ‘ears that can hear’. We experience a living radiant world interwoven through the outer world of appearances, and we feel the radiance as love.
When we experience inner radiance then it is our reference, our center, our quintessential state of being and we then not just understand but experience the second precept our Beloved Babaji imparted -
“Everything from the inside out”.
There is a beautiful quote from Mahmud Shabisari which says
There is only One Light
And ‘you’ and ‘me’
Are holes in the lamp-shade
These lines hold a profound truth. Presence is ONE. This is where the human mind backs away. The human mind identifies with the self that looks out from the physical mirror my face, my hands, my life, my wife, my children, my job, my success, my purpose and on and on. The greatest challenge to this human mind is to release the hold on ‘my’. And it is only through releasing ‘my’ that the quintessential SELF can be experienced and embraced. The human 'me' is afraid of loosing its identity. It can put up an endless, very clever fight to hold to its limited world of outer form, outer value, outer approval. But once the SELF is touched these outer forms all slip away in their importance. It is not that we loose identity when we open to the greater self, it is that we realize the truth at the center of the paradox that says I AM the ONE and the many. I AM all and I AM no-thing. I AM everywhere and nowhere.
We hear of becoming One with another, or reaching unity consciousness on Earth but the true meaning of this cannot be embraced until one transcends the experience of ‘I’ and ‘you’ and the very thought of that can be alarming to the human self identifying with its earthly reflection.
“You can’t understand this with your mind
You must burst open” Rumi
We know now about the unified field and the fact that every thought, word and deed we have and do ripples out from us through the universe. At the far reaches of the universe it meets the Cosmic Mirror where it becomes magnified and then begins its return journey. Every thought we have affects the whole world, and profoundly and minutely creates our inner and outer world. When we first truly realize the truth of this we can suffer from an overwhelming sense of responsibility. What we have also learned is, thankfully, that the higher the thought the greater field of influence it has. David Hawkins writes of this beautifully in his Map of Consciousness. That is why one man in a state of enlightenment can affect the whole world, and through the ripple effect actually elevate the whole world. This is what has happened with such enlightened ones as Jesus, Buddha, Mahatma Gandhi.
When we gather together we form morphogenic fields of resonance. Again, the higher the frequency of the gathering the more beneficial and effective for all of humanity. In the quietness of our devoted gatherings we can effect very beneficial change. This bears into the precept “Everything from the inside out”. We can seek the Presence, enlightenment and Oneness forever on the outside, in society, government, religion, study, friends, beloveds. But ‘the kingdom of heaven is within’ and it is only within that the doors at the center of the paradox can open into the inner kingdom of the Heart.
We have also been told ‘unless you become as little children you shall not enter the kingdom of God” The word God and the word Father in scripture can be replaced with the word Presence. The human mind that clings to identity is not childlike; it is very serious and concerned. When we engage the human mind in our spiritual studies then we come up with the experience of ‘spiritual work’. Spiritual work is necessary while we are ‘retraining’ our behavioral patterns. However, if we stay with the mind only we stay in the desert of mentation. The deeper levels of being have to be engaged. We need to dip deeply into the subconscious reservoirs of inspiration and beauty. If we are consistent with this there comes a moment, un-timed and seemingly spontaneous, when the well of inner nectar flows up over the rim and impregnates our entire awareness. We are then upon the Golden Threshold and from that moment on awakening is joyful, full of poetry, art, beauty, love, enthusiasm and delight. When we touch the Presence it is like falling in Love. When the Presence touches us we remember who we are. When the inner nectar of the divine can finally begin to flow through our arteries and veins then we are forever aware of the inner realms of beauty upon which this outer world of lesser truths has its being. When the sight of an early morning rose in the first light brings a sense of incredible awe and wonder to our hearts, or the lines of life on a aged hand, or the eyes of a street person begging for food, or the announcement that another war has begun on earth if all of these experiences cause our hearts to open in realization of the Preciousness of life, then we are upon the Golden Threshold of awakening. When we can see and feel the beauty of life, the taste of the living Presence in every experience without judgement or pause then we know it is the unseen radiance within that is singing its silent song to our open hearts. When Mother Teresa was gathering in the homeless it was not their distress she was focusing upon, it was the Divine heart at the center. When we can view all nations in this way then war will become an impossible option. This is the true meaning of the phrase “Love your enemies”. The higher power and focus will always have more influence. This is the only way to heal the world.
We are all on Earth together at this remarkable time, all holes in the same Cosmic Lampshade, all illuminating our own sphere of influence in life. We are here to co-create with this living light, to be stewards of its precious essence. We have this living Earth as our garden, each aspect of Earth’s body filled with the unseen radiance at the center nucleus of all her atoms. Inner radiance responds to awareness of it. The greatest focus of the living light is within the Heart of each one of us. We are here to witness this living light. It is this living light that shines through the hole of our outer identities that when recognized leads us back into experience of Oneness. Through the holes in the lampshade we shine forth into the world, but within and beyond the lampshade we enter the great within, the source of the light. When we lay down the small human identity ‘when we die’ then we transcend the paradox of ‘I’ and ‘you’ and we are ‘born to eternal life’ as our beloved St Francis (the Master Kuthumi) experienced.
This is where we are heading on earth, beyond the duality. We are birthing into an age where we have the living experience, not just the human thought, that your child is as precious as my child, my family is the same as yours, my heart of living radiance is simply a reflection of your heart. While we are profoundly individual, and scintillatingly different and unique, yet at the deepest heart Core we are birthed from the same Cosmic seed. In this realization we have no doubt to the answer in the question posed “Am I my brother’s keeper?” The answer is a resounding YES. We are each the Keeper of the Radiant Presence, the Eternal Light, the delicate balance on Earth. There is nothing insignificant about us. We are profoundly powerful. When we encounter someone who truly witnesses the living Presence within us our hearts expand and we become more courageous. Witnessing is one of the greatest acts of love we can offer. When we witness the living Presence, the outer form has little significance. It is understood as an outer shell of accumulated illusion. When we can witness the living radiance within each other, without judgement of the outer form, without any attempt to change it, without any conflict, then the living Presence is given a ‘safe’ garden in which to grow and express. Inner radiance responds to awareness of it and loves to co-create. The whole kingdom of Nature is filled with Inner Radiance. When we approach in loving awareness of the precious life within we are beginning our journey back to the original garden of Grace and Beauty.
This is what we are being called home to on Earth witnessing the living radiant Presence in each other, which transcends the paradoxical duality of ‘outer’ life. In witnessing the Presence we are living from ’the inside out!” Thus we live increasingly in a state of wonder and a desire to witness this Presence everywhere, knowing that it is through the act of witnessing that the Presence in another responds. Every expression of this travels out to the farthest reaches of our universe and then returns gathering power and expression. This is how we redeem our lives and travel together back through the holes in the Cosmic Lampshade into the Heart of Hearts, into the Fields of Radiance.
Now that you have
Poured yourself into
My nectar full of pollen bones
Imbued your star seeds, fire seeds
Into the cavity of my lungs
I am twirling, whirling
Spinning like a dervish
Dancing to the core of memory
Opening out the tender skin
Of sound, echoing under the flaps
And feathers of your wings
That carry the drum song
Of ancient winds
Across the horizon
Of my longing
Now that you have
Rushed the atoms
Of your soul
Through the sieve of my
Pounding heart
I am opened, emptied
Wholly free, a hollow reed
Sing through me!
Sing through me!
Sing through me!
(From my book The Flaming Serpent )
At first these moments of union come and go. When present they are intensely full of bliss and ecstasy as the body cells recalibrate with this experience of the radiance within. Then the experience fades and separation and ‘normal’ life are equally intense with a new level of despair!
Gradually the light within molds and shapes the flesh to live at higher levels of awareness and there is an unbearable poignancy in witnessing the yet sleeping world. When we take the blinders from our own eyes and allow ourselves to see and feel there is an experience of tremendous sorrow in witnessing the suffering and brutality in the outer world. Our goal, I believe, is to be able to ‘stay’ aware in the Presence while living our daily lives. As each one of us moves into this awareness, feeling the inner fabric of radiant love within all life, our world we change. This is what is meant by ‘being in the world but not of it’.
Those who see the exquisite light within, the hidden radiance, can never cease to hold the vision of its resurrection into living outer expression. The truth of the phrase “I Am that” is felt and known. The light shines into the darkness and the darkness becomes aware of itself as the sacred living vessel within which shines the inner light. In truth there is nowhere on earth that does not hold the living presence within it, no matter how unaware the outer form is of the hidden treasure it holds at its core.
It was into these Fields of Radiance that we first came, to reap the harvest of our own creations. Along the way, we lost sight of the radiance and began to focus on the outer form. Yet, the outer form can never satisfy the inner longing of the Soul. Ultimately it begins its search, in earnest, for the hidden gold. We have arrived now en mass at the beginning of the great remembrance, born out of the combined despair and meaninglessness of a way of life that is without sanctity. I believe that once this 'experience' of such tremendous separation is over we will remember it forever and never need to dip this far into forgetfulness again. In that sense, all of our experiences on Earth have been worth while.
We are, on Earth, making an about turn. I believe we will do this in waves of consciousness, each wave assisting in lighting the way for the following wave. We are beginning to crack the shell of the outer forms of separation and opposing truths, the age old Hubris of the tragic heroes. It is time to become humble again, and honest with ourselves. We are beginning to remember and to appreciate and embrace the daily miracle of life on this incredible planet.
In Fields of Radiance we live and move and have our being. The beloved we seek is in everything, in everyone, it is the Radiant Presence that loves to live, express and unite. When the veils drop from our outer vision we will be amazed at how intricate and resplendent is the inner working of the light. We are surrounded and inter-penetrated with higher fields of consciousness. We will also be able to see the effects of our thoughts and feelings and how they shape the finer 'material' of our 'dream bodies'. I believe that if we could see the effect of an unkind word it would bring us to attention very quickly. We not only effect the fabric of our own inner bodies, having them take on the semblance of our words and deeds, we effect each other. If a mother in the supermarket shouting at a young child could actually see what is happening to the fine, beautiful inner body of that little one, she would stop in horror. If we could actually bare to witness what we are really doing when we go to war there would be a mass awakening. I don't believe many of us truly mean to act blindly, we have just forgotten how interconnected we are all. We are each the caretakers of this creational power that molds our personal and collective worlds. Let us be more care full.
When we experience Presence we have touched into the creational power. We know that there is no division between that power and the Core of our own Heart light. It is when we create the Great Vision from this awareness of Presence, within the Fields of Radiance that the Vision will hold true and begin to express through each one of us, as holes in the Cosmic Lampshade. What is your vision of the world? What are you helping to create? Let us gather more often in morphogenic fields of hope and love and actively participate as the co-creators. There is nothing insignificant about us. We are profoundly powerful and the higher the frequency of our Visions the greater the radiance. Let us allow our radiance to shine forth from the inside out, dispelling forever the paradoxical lesser truths of the divided heart.
